For us, product safety is of utmost priority. With the Food Contact Notification (FCN) we have obtained regulatory clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration for the majority of our industrial and laser marking pigments in plastic applications.

FCN is like the gold standard of product safety and is the preferred process of authorizing new uses of food additives and is recognized globally. With the Food Contact Notification (FCN) for food & beverage, our decorative effect pigments can make your packaging more visually appealing. For sustainability, incorporate laser-sensitive pigments inside the polymer to be able to replace traditional labels. FCN: The Food Contact Notification (FCN) is approved by the US authorities. It is bound to the manufacturer and supplier of the product and does not need a periodic review.
GRASE & TOR: GRASE stands for Generally Recognized As Safe and Effective and these substances are listed by the FDA. TOR means Threshold Of Regulations also defined by the FDA.
LOL: A Legal Opinion Letter (LOL) is a formal expression based on the expert's knowledge from the law firm. It is not regulatory agency issued and has a validity of 5 years.

You can review which intended uses are cleared, and what the limitations are regarding the conditions of use. Decorative pigments with Food Contact Notification The vast majority of pigments from our industrial decorative portfolio have obtained FDA clearance for food-safe use in polymer packaging.
For Syn Mica pigments – FCN 2117Synthetic mica is used as a substrate for effect pigments. It is more transparent and enables cooler and clearer colors. As it is not listed as GRASE or TOR by the FDA, an FCN is necessary to be safely used for food contact materials.
For Glass-based pearlescent pigments – FCN 2075The Miraval® family has the Twinkle range for color travel with sparkle, our Magic and Cosmic for stunning sparkle effects and Scenic for a smaller particle size but still with intense sparkle.
For Rutile TiO2 pigments – FCN 2119Rutile increases the color intensity! It is used in the most colorful pigments we offer.
For AL2O3 pigments – FCN 2082Al2O3 is a substrate used for Xirallic® pigments. Xirallic® pigments show a unique sparkle and color intensity, even with a smaller particle size. In the final product, these pigments keep their brilliance and attractive eye-catching effects.
For AL2O3 pigments – FCN 2082Al2O3 can also be used in a protective coating for weatherability of our Iriodin® pigments. It is the so-called WAY Technology for weatherability and anti-yellowing properties.

Laser pigments with Food Contact NotificationVarious laser pigments obtained Food Contact Notification status from the United States FDA for use in polymers.
For Cassiterite pigments – FCN 2212Various laser pigments contain a cassiterite. These pigments may be used as a laser-marking agent for all food-contact polymers, except for use in contact with infant formula and human milk. For use at levels up to: 1) 0.5% by weight in polymers in contact with all food types under Conditions of Use E through H. 2) 0.1% by weight in polymers in contact with all food types under Conditions of Use C through D. Please refer to the specific FCN for the applicable conditions of use.
For Modified TiO2 pigments – FCN 2164For use at levels up to 0.5% by weight in polymers in contact with all food types under Conditions of Use A through H. The Food Contact Substance is not for use in contact with infant formula and human milk. Please refer to the specific FCN for the applicable conditions of use.
For GRASE recognized pigmentsWe also have pigments which are based on materials which are "generally recognized as safe and effective“ GRASE. They consist of Iriotec® mica or Iriotec® mica plus iron oxide pigments.
